Planning for an ageing population
It is widely recognised that the UK is underprepared to meet the needs of its ageing population. Currently, there are more than 12 million over- 65s in the UK, and this figure is expected to increase by 50% over the next 20 years. Looking at the societal challenges we face, there has been a fundamental failure to address the specific housing, health and care needs of this demographic.
There has been a dearth of supply in housing-with-care in the UK. Figures suggest that only 7,000 units are being delivered to market each year, the disparity between supply and demand is vast. With a backdrop of massive social and economic benefits that this type of housing brings, government should be the driving force in increasing delivery of this type of housing to market. The reality is the reverse. In the UK, delivery of housing-with-care is stifled by our planning system.
